My Thrifty Husband

Check out our new goat shelter, courtesy of my thrifty husband. He whipped this thing together in one afternoon and for a grand total of $30. Yes folks, all he had to buy was some lumber, the rest was salvaged from old barns. Go Lucas! Clearly the girls are enjoying it and I just had to slap a coat of red paint on it. Another cool feature is he built it up on skids so when the ground gets too poopy, we hook it up to the truck and move her to another area to be fertilized. No pooper scooper required. Got to love a good plan.(and a good husband)

Life With Dairy Goats

Well, we got some milkin' goats. They have been a lot of fun! We milk at 6:30 every morning and 6:30 every evening. It is amazing to see a little miracle happen like milk everyday. Good milk, milk that we know what goes into it, milk that agrees with nora's little digestive system, unpasturized milk!

Their names are maybelle and daisy and for now, they pretty much hang out on our porch and dooryard. They were quite shy at first, but one brushing for Maybelle and she followed me around for the rest of the afternoon. Daisy is still pretty skittish. She has a lame leg and is around just to keep Maybelle company. (apparantly having only one goat is a big mistake!) Daisy still likes to be brushed too... once you get her caught.

They are registered Saanens which are supposedly the holstiens of the dairy goats. We get close to a gallon from Maybelle everyday and this is only her first year to milk. The lady we bought them from was awesome (she's a teacher too!) and she is going to show me how to make goat cheese this summer.
So we are one step closer to providing for our own nutritional needs. Eggs should start laying around August and so far the garden is looking decent. It feels good!
